Join us on Thursday, June 19th, for a special screening of the movie “From Slavery to Legacy: The Alonzo Herndon Story” at St. James. This inspiring film chronicles the remarkable journey of Alonzo Herndon, who rose from slavery to become Atlanta’s first African American millionaire.
The movie highlights Herndon’s path from humble beginnings with just $11 to his success in owning multiple barbershops and becoming a major real estate investor. Facing the challenges of the Jim Crow era, he founded the Atlanta Life Insurance Company in 1905, an institution that continued his legacy when it was acquired by a Magic Johnson-led insurance group in 2023. This powerful story is a testament to perseverance and hope.
